Welcome to the fun of an ILC.
You should not have to touch the lens barrel other than to support the lens. Touching one of your AF buttons should start focus. If the focus is a very long way off from your subject, one way of forcing it to lock on is to touch the barrel. I tend to not do that, instead I force the AF to be close to where I want it at the start by simply focusing using the AF button on the landscape on roughly the same focal plane as my subject. From there, the camera will do all the work.
Thanks for the feedback - very helpful.
I recall when taking that eagle photo I pressed the AF button to begin with and nothing seemed to happen as far as focusing in on the eagle - so I moved the barrel to zoom in on the eagle - then pressed the AF button and I could see it focus on the eagle's face.
I guess it was just too far away to capture focus with the AF button. I'm going to practice your method - yes, I want the camera to do the work.

You’ve made a nice start with the eagle.
Make sure lens drive when AF impossible is set to ON as that really helps too. It is in the Pink AF menu page 3
Thank you DA - thanks for the heads up on the AF impossible setting - I've got it on.
