I have been using R cameras R, RP, R5, R6, R7 and R10 on and around the beach extensively and so far haven’t had any issues and I’m out most days. I don’t give a second thought to using these cameras around salt water or in dusty environments. Heck, a few months ago the R6 took a dump in the salt marsh. It was covered in salt water and muck. It was a lot of effort to get everything cleaned up but the gear has been working normally so far.

Everyone’s mileage will vary. But honestly this is an anecdotal.
You don’t say…
One person might do this to all their weather sealed equipment and never have a problem while another might take their equipment out in a light drizzle and end up with a major issue.
Yep, sometimes people even get struck by lightning, you never know what might happen.
The fact is that manufacturers literally state they won’t cover weather damage.
Yep, that’s very important to keep in mind and I believe it’s always a good practice to take reasonable measures to minimize contact with water…. It is also important to keep in mind that it’s not necessary to live in fear and that’s really what my point was.
So each person should take the varying stories into account and decide for themselves. I don’t exactly baby my camera. I can dump 4.5k on a new R5 body (probably mk2) if my current one kicks the bucket, but I would rather not. And I like my gear to be cosmetically nice in certain respects (no scratched LCD for example so I put a protective film on it. But it is a tool I will use as I see fit.
Basically I am against advising people to use their equipment without a care in the world and face a 4.5k loss. End of the day it is each person’s own risk and responsibility. If a manufacturer won’t cover certain things under warrantee like water damage the it is the user’s own risk.
My sister works as a pro, and she can pretty much justify the cost and accepts the fact of their usage (wear) over time. Generally she goes through a body ever 2-5 years. She will buy those f1.2 3k+ lenses without a second thought. She can justify the weight as well as the cost. Getting the shot and the work comes first. I do photography for a hobby, the gear really doesn’t pay for it self, I can’t justify to my family throwing money at my hobby instead of a great trip with them, even if I can technically afford it… YMMV.
