Lens design is a balancing act between many different variables, and with several of the Z lenses Nikon have given themselves more freedom to optimise other parameters by bothering less about distortion and using software to correct this. A 5x wide-to-tele zoom is a challenge for distortion anyway, so with the approach they've been taking lately I don't find it at all surprising that this one has substantial distortion.

What's more surprising is that you can see it, given the software corrections they employ and that I've not noticed others reporting this.
