in the big picture, from what I've read and seen, you my friend, have just bought in to your favorite focal length and the best 50 f1.2 on the planet!

I did my research. I've paid 4550 euro to get there, so it should be the best in this universe at minimum.

I'm researching the Sigma FE 85mm f/1.4 DN as well, but with that lens you're getting strong cats eye shapes in the bokeh, and those cats eye shapes remain up to fairly narrow apertures. It's not round at all at f/2.0. I guess that's the price you're paying for compactness. I'm sticking with my 50mm f/1.2 and 105mm f/1.4 for now.

our favorite lenses of all time matter, and it sounds like yours are 105 f1.4 and 50 f1.2

mine are 32 f1.4 and 100L

I bought the RF 85 f2 IS but barely have used it

We both have tried to love this lens, didn't we...

50 fov is my favorite focal length also on high mpxl because I can crop and don't need 85 fov as much, love my compact 32 f1.4 on high mpxl m6II that will never see the light of day on RF mount, it is too good, and would take sales away from Canon's expensive FF stuff

Which is a shame, especially when put into the perspective of the lack of an RF 50mm f/1.4 IS überUSM and an RPII with some more caffeine in it's AF.

ahh, that is where I'd be headed, ever since the 24 IS, the 28 IS, the 35 F2 IS, I felt certain they'd give us at least a sharp 50 f2 IS, but go figure, they don't provide because it is viewed as a cannibal of their portrait FF expensive lens cash cows

Good for them. I'm on the Sony FE platform now. My both most expensive lens and second native mirrorless lens was a Sony purchase. Chances are I will never buy any Canon mount lens anymore.

RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L vs Tamron FE 70-180mm f/2.8?

RF 135mm f/1.8 IS USM vs Samyang FE 135mm f/1.8?

no option at al vs Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8?

RF 28-70mm f/2.0 vs the 50mm GM on one body and a stellar 28mm prime on the other?

RF 100-400or500mm vs Tamron FE 50-400mm?

and there's no RF zoom as compact as the FE 28-60mm because Canon thinks every lens has to have a huge magnification factor.

Canon should learn to compete with other manufacturers in stead of fearing cannibalizing their own stuff.

in the old days, to do weddings, between my second shooter and I, we carried in gear costing north of $10K

But for me, I wouldn't deploy that much expensive gear today at one time unless I was being paid.

for me, the formula is to work within the Canon system ( even though your points are valid), otherwise I'm going to be hosed on my radio Odins and lights I've spent years to develop and learn lighting (Rembrandt, edge, butterfly, off camera flash, 60 inch umbrellas, mag mod diffusers, gels, globes, grids, backgrounds, etc) which work nicely on my RP and even are ok on my m6II with the back screen.

for me, the formula is to stay relatively small, and the m6II + 32 + 11-22 does that in combination with the 100L and RP + 24-105 L and RF 85 F2 IS.  I'll likely add the RF 100-400 which will perform better for me than my 55-250 stm on m6II.

what would upset me is if Canon locked out my 3rd party odins -- like they did with SL3.

I am a bit envious of your relatively small A7IV + the best relatively small speedy 50 f1.2 on the planet to shoot without flash.  But I've been burned over the years on third party lenses as bodies update.  Other Manufacturers might tighten down as well.

The formula for me is about the photographer, cameras and lenses, lighting, processing, with lots of power in the smallest form factor that I can stomach.

YMMV

Best wishes Storm!  Be safe my friend!
