But customers never learn. They will happily get the R10, think about lenses later on, locking themselves up in the third never complete Canon aps-c platform.

Well you’ll have to plop me in that “happily stupid/naive” category then!

You have enough gear to reach for full frame stuff when you need it.  I was talking about aps-c as your one and only system.

I’ve recently been mentoring a budding photographer (high school student) and they wanted to upgrade the older Nikon DSLR they’ve been using for Photojournalism at school. I immediately recommended the Canon R10 + RF 18-150 kit as being the best fit for them in regard to its capabilities, cost, size, and future-proofing!

I'm not with you on that future proofing part. As soon as they want a brighter than f/2.8 equivalent prime or an f/2.8 (f/4.5 equivalence) USM standard zoom they'll run into problems.

A used Sony FE Vario-Tessar 24-70mm f/4.0 ZA OSS is 450 euro, 1 year warranty included.

Heck, a used Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DN is 700 euro, 1 year warranty included. (A new one is only 850....)

A used Sony A7II is 700 euro, one year warranty included.

R10 + 18-150mm is 1400 euro new.

The R10 might have faster AF, but the Sony will get you the IQ advantage, and once you want to upgrade to get a bright standard zoom with fast AF all you have to do at the FE mount is change that A7II for an A7III in 2026. With the R10 adapting the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art is all you can do. I think that's not the most sexy solution when it comes to future proofing. You can also do f/1.8 with the 24&35mm primes but that will set you back 1250 euro (note, that's 400 more than the full frame f/2.8 Sigma zoom new), you'll need to change lenses, and there's still no 28ish equivalence.

When you want to buy primes for you A7II you can get a nice f/1.8 in stead of f/2.8 equivalence options for little prices. Samyang 45&75mm f/1.8 both for only 800 new.  A used Samyang 85mm f/1.4 is within reach from 500 euro 1 year warranty included (I've paid 350 for my  ef-m Sigma 56mm f/1.4).  Sony 28mm f/2.0 300 euro or so.  Lots of great value for money stuff there.

(They spent their savings on it). Plus they now get a “teacher” who’s intimately familiar with the system.

That's priceless.

Note: that last part about obsolescence is the only reason I didn’t recommend the M6ii to this youngster.

I also get to share a lens or two with them (RF 35/1.8 IS for starters, EF-S 55-250 IS in spring), so they’ll have a pretty good idea what direction they’ll want to head from here.

Borrowing lenses is perfect.

Personally, I really wouldn’t mind owning an R10 myself. It’s comfortable with great ergo and superb AF (DIGIC X). And I already own all the lenses I need for it! Hmmm 🤔

If you lend that 35mm to those youngsters it's an excuse to get the RF 24mm f/1.8 as well.

45 is more than enough, but 500.000 isn't
