With both DSLR and ML, many users set up Spot or Single-Point AF without understanding the consequence.

The problem is that the AF system needs contrast along a line. It isn’t sonar. When you tell AF to use just a single spot, if there’s no contrast there, the camera can’t focus. It’s even worse on the R series cameras because they don’t have cross point autofocus.

I don’t think this is the entirety of your problems, but it’s helpful to know.

Thanks. I have been an advocate of understanding this for quite some time. While Spot many be more precise it is not more accurate than Single, Expansion or Zone AF. If you tape a monetary bill to a wall Spot AF will not yield a sharper image than Single point AF.

That being said Single and Spot AF areas are larger on ML bodies. As for pre-focusing a subject when in Eye AF I still prefer a larger AF point to get as much contrast as possible. For faster moving subjects a larger AF point is even better. I've shown that Jared Polin Sony vs R3 shoutout video quite a few times and he uses Expansion AF. He also shows that using other ML bodies.
