Is current gen cameras like x-t5 any better? Do you still need to use your phone to transmit gps to camera or maybe there is now some accessory like Canon/Nikon had for DSLRs (hotshoe-mounted box with gps receiver) What is the current best practices for geotagging your photos?

I don't believe there is any verified "best practice".  Best practice is going to be whatever works for you.

Personally, I've never liked the apps from the camera companies.  I've found them to not update position as frequently as I want.  But that's just me.

If it's not built into the camera or a GPS accessory attached directly to the camera, I prefer to use a GPS tracking app on my iPhone.  Turn it on, it creates a track log, transfer it to the PC, and use the map module in LR to tag all the photos.  It's a tiny bit more effort, but it works and is reliable.
