Macro: will a small tripod suffice?

Regarding the original post.:

I do not bother with miniature tripods. I prefer proper strong sturdy tripods for the job. My closeup gear: camera with macro lens is minimum 1.5 kg, With longer lenses, illumination, rails, etc it can weight twice that or more. If you sometimes work close to 1:1 or beyond or are focus stacking a solid support is essential. Proper tools for the job…….

For low level shots I normally splay my tripod legs to the ground. Ballhead on top. Working a camera between the legs of a tripod is akward, especially if the tripod is short or flimsy so I try to avoid that as far as possible. If working between tripod legs is necessary, I do as I describe.

Or dig a hole in the ground. On my own property of course. 😀
