I honestly don't know why they released a M6 II instead of a M5 II (or both).

At least in the US, the M5 outsold the original M6 by a fairly large margin. I am not sure why Canon did not upgrade the M5. The most logical guess is that the R10 and R7 were supposed to launch sooner, but were delayed by the pandemic. Canon did not want the confusion of a M5 II sitting on the shelves next to the R10 and R7. With no M5 II, anyone upgrading from a DSLR will see the R10 and R7 as the most viable options.

True, although there was 3 years between the M6 II and R7/10 release and they updated the M50 (well, software) in 2020. Even if the R series was released in 2021, that's still 2 years between the 6 II and R release

I am not sure if I am following your dates.

The RF mount launched in September of 2018 with the EOS R.  It was almost an entire year later when the M6 II launched in August of 2019.  Right from the outset of the RF mount, Canon was likely planning to launch crop models.  It was just a question of when?  It is possible the R7 was slated for fall of 2020 and the R10 spring of 2021, but both of those dates slipped due to the pandemic.

I don't know. To make things worse, the M50 to me was a weird product. It was better than the M5 in a lot of ways but with a worse body. It seemingly fixed the mediocre AF issues the original M100, M5 and M6 had, but lacked a lot of the more prosumer dials. It's like the Rebel to the XXD of the EF-M line.

The M50 is not necessarily weird, it just covers all of the basics at a very affordable price.  It was never intended to be a higher level model like the M5.  The fact that the M50 could do 95% of what the M5 could do did not help the case for an update to the M5.

It's just a bummer because Fuji, Sony and Sigma have shown that you can make quality APS-C glass at compact sizes and while I really like the general M5 and R10 size/feel/layout, it's a shame that you're pretty limited to a few primes and slow kit lenses, unless you adapt full sized lenses.
