Macro: will a small tripod suffice?

Re: How low?

I use a similar concept to get very low. A sturdy ballhead with an Arca clamp mounted upside down. To this I attach a rail so I can use my camera the normal way.

There is one point which I think need consideration.:

Camera plates and lens feet usually go in different directions. The rail clamp should go the right way to be useful. My solution is an Arca rail with a removable clamp. It can be attached in 90 degree increments.

If a rail has its fixed clamp turned the wrong way for the camera, what to do? An alternative is of course to use a generic camera plate which can be attached to the camera in any direction. I suspect this is how you have dealt with this issue? Personally I try to avoid generic camera plates for various reasons. But they are cheaper than camera specific plates and of course they are good enough for this purpose.

You have to move the tripod to get the view you want. The possibilities may be limited due to obstacles such as vegetation. I have found a few additional rails to allow minor movements in various directions to be useful.
