Well, everything is pointing towards the elephant in the room, the M6II.

Correct, and as I said, had they released a M5II, I would probably have stayed and put up with the slow lenses.

Growing up shooting with a DSLR though I can't get used to shooting with a rear LCD,

I grew up shooting film, so it took me a couple of days to adapt to the rear LCD.  I still wince when i see people using DSLRs in Live View without a tripod though.

and my experience with the original M6 was that the attachment EVF was just bulky, prevented me from using an external flash for portraits and indoor shots and was just another compromise in an already compromised system.

I haven't used either M6, but I don't think an M6 plus EVF is any bulkier than my EOS R, and it's certainly smaller than my 5Ds.  But the point of EOS M for me is its size, and an EVF hump makes even the M50 II too big for my taste. I'm tall enough for portraits using an eye level viewfinder to be always looking down on the subject, so I prefer taking them from waist or chest level anyway.  I really don't like on-camera flash at all, apart from filling in shadows outdoors in sunlight.  The EOS M compromise for me is that the flippy screen is difficult to see in portrait orientation.

I honestly don't know why they released a M6 II instead of a M5 II (or both).

Sales figures?  If anybody knows for sure, they're not telling.

On the other hand, I'm probably keeping my M100 and the 15-45 as a "throw in the bag" type of camera. If something happens to it, I don't really care since it's a $200-250 setup.

M100 + 11-22mm for me.
