Even though Canon's old 85, f/1.8 has significant copy-to-copy variation, I'm surprised that it is so bad that your 70-200 still beats it at f/4. Has the 85 been damaged? As for your Canon 35, f/2 IS, it's considered to be an excellent lens with low copy-to-copy variation, that you also feel your 70-200 has better IQ is really puzzling. Canon's 100-400 L IS II is significantly better than the original 100-400 and has low copy-to-copy variation. Personally, I use my old 70-200 with Canon's Extender 1.4X III and find the IQ to be very acceptable. I haven't compared this combo to my former 100-400 L IS II, but it certainly is more manageable.
