Im using both RF 100 Macro and (mainly for landscape panos) the RF 70-200/2.8. Too heavy to carry both to sightseeing points, but in case I want to shoot some flowers or small animals I use the close up lens 500 D (77 mm thread) which allows 0.5 x macros at 200 mm and could be used with the 70-200/4 too. It is much quicker to use this lens than extension tubes.

The thing that worries me about those large filter thread close up filters is the weight. I don't like them on lenses that extend, like the new RF 70-200s or 24-105. The weight really makes the extending barrel sag and it worries me about long term damage. The EF 70-200 were solid and fixed length so there was no issue there, but not true on RF.

You are right - the weight of the RF 70-200/4 is around 770 g and that of the Canon 500 D lens around 170 g. However the RF 700-200/4 has nearly 1300 g and the thread of its extending barrel is considerably arger and sturdier so I never had concerns about weight or changing balance.

Plus, for the cost of a good close up filter you are half way to a bargain grade used EF 100mm f2.8.

Certainly a close up lens couldn't replace an EF/RF 100/2.8 macro. However, the high quality achromatic 500 D/77 mm was around 100 $/€ and I sold my EF 100/2.8 macro for around 700.

You'd be surprised how cheap the non-L version can be. I paid a little less than this for mine, but this one even has a 6 month warranty for $260:

I agree - I forgot that I had one 10 years ago and it was even a little bit sharper than the L-version!
