Don't count out RF-S just yet. We are not even 8 months into the existence of RF-S, and there are already solid rumors of more RF-S gear coming in just a few months. Look at where the M system was at 8 months in. Canon needs to move all crop sensor DSLR sales to RF-S. Two bodies and two lenses won't cut it. Canon will need to expand RF-S significantly, and they will need to do it quicker than they ever did with the M system. RF-S may look like a lateral move today, but advancing technology and a broader model lineup will change that view in the not to distant future.

Give it another year, and I bet we are at four RF-S bodies and five RF-S lenses. And here's a thought... One of the rumored RF-S cameras coming this year is supposed to be marketed toward vlogging and will have a form factor similar to the M6 II. What if Canon was the first manufacturer to not be a bonehead and they put IBIS in their compact vlogging camera? Odds are slim, and it would probably use the new 24mp sensor with the M50 tilt-swivel screen, but still interesting. Add the rumored RF-S 22mm pancake to that camera and it gets even more interesting.

The RF-S bodies coming out are promising, but until there are third party lenses, I think the RF-S lens lineup will remain inferior to EF-M. I just can’t imagine Canon releasing several affordable F1.4 primes like we have with EF-M.

f1.4 in RF-s is key

they'll not release any in the portrait range, zero, nada
