Not that Disappointed with Canon

Starting out, let me say that I love my M system stuff. I've got 2 M50's and an M100 and most of the M series lenses. I can produce some nice photos with that lot. But, as I think we all know, it's basically a dead end now.

Comments like that look designed to be self-fulfilling prophecies. It's been a dead end for nearly ten years now. But from what Canon consistently said about it, it was intended for people who (a) wanted a decent portable camera but weren't interested in having a great deal of kit or (b) wanted a small companion to their full-frame systems that was compatible with EF lenses.

So, I've been watching the R series coming out - and the R7/10 look OK, but nothing too special apart from the IBIS in the R7. I like the APS-C format (I have a 6D if I want full frame).

The R10 is a lot less unattractive than the 77D. The frame rate and AF are pretty spectacular for Canon APS-C and its price range. Still wouldn't have one but a lot of people really like theirs, so Canon must have done something right there. The R7 is pretty special compared to the 7D II, I'm really envious of that horizon levelling IS. It's pretty much what you would get if you put a permanent evf and IBIS on a weather sealed M6 Mkii, so it's not significantly smaller than the EOS R and a lot more than I want to pay for an APS-C camera. But then, the R7 was bigger and heavier than the 6D.

So lenses. Canon have produced the 18-45 (same as the M18-55 but with less distance) and the 18-150 (Same as). Now I hear they will produce the 11-22 next year. Also 'same as'.

I never expected Canon's third stab at crop format lenses to be as enthusiastic as their second effort. And the fact that the RF-S lenses are compatible with RF mount is a disincentive to producing fast and expensive crop lenses for it. The 32mm f/1.4 (50mm f/2.3 FF equivalent) is twice the price of the RF 50mm f/1.8 and only offers a huge advantage over the fastest two stops of its range.

When I started with the M, I had had the 20D, 30D, 40D and 70D - all gave me a little more. I went with the M (first was the M3) because of the size advantage and I haven't regretted it. But why should I change again? It's basically giving me much the same as I already have.

You shouldn't. Unless you need the 7D successor. But the 7D was the antithesis of EOS M. RF-S is not a replacement for EF-M.

I was hoping for some extras in the R-APS-C range. Maybe a 15-80 lens. Maybe better dynamic range without too much messing around. So far (apart from IBIS), I haven't seen anything to make me go 'wow'. (And I'm not over impressed with the video specs - although I don;t do video seriously, so maybe that's what I am missing).

So, just my thoughts on a late Monday night. Comments invited.
