Yes, it’s because of transmission — everything in the optical path absorbs some light regardless of how well it’s coated, its material, etc. Basic physics.

Also, I forgot to mention what everyone should already know: Extenders reduce the effective aperture of the lens. 1.4X is a 1-stop reduction, 2X is 2 stops. It's been quite a while since I studied the reason for this. The important thing is that smaller aperture = less light transmission.
