Thinking of switching away from Canon R5 to OM-System…Has anyone else done this?
1

I’m thinking of switching from Canon R5 and RF lenses (RF 100-500 L, RF 14-35 L, RF 24-105L, RF 100 Macro L, RF 70-200mm f2.8 L) and moving to the OM-1 with Oly 8-25 PRO, 12-100 PRO, and eventually, maybe (once I’ve saved up money) the OLY 150-400 PRO. Would probably get the Oly 60mm macro, Oly 25 or 45mm f1.8 as well for a lens with shallow depth of field.

I’m hoping to put some money in the bank account with the Canon trade-in, lower my weight and gear output for travel and hiking, and gain some interesting features that would be fun to use, such as Live ND, Live Composite, Etc. Also, the IP53 weather-rating would be a nice reliable feature to have traveling as well…(but I wonder if the weather-sealing of the R5 and L lenses are not up to par…just not advertised as IP53???).

I’m thinking with the swap that I would really only need one or two lenses for travel and could possibly just get by with one lens for hikes I take. Rather than packing a few lenses just in case. Even though I can handhold my R5 for a surprisingly long exposure, with the OM-1, I also suspect that I wouldn’t need to bring my tripod and filters for fun long exposure shots of waterfalls and the ocean with the Live ND. However, with the Canon R5 and using the in-camera 1.6x crop, I can achieve pretty close to the FOV of the Oly lenses and still have a 17mp image too boot!

I am an experienced enthusiast and seem to gravitate towards wildlife/nature, landscape and travel imagery. Every once in awhile I will do a commissioned portrait session. Every once in awhile I will sell a few decent sized (over 16x20 inches) prints per year.

I’m not too motivated right now to kick any potential photography business into full gear and market myself more.

Biggest questions I have is will the weight difference matter? If there isn’t too much weight difference, Am I making a dumb decision? (I’ve posted some images with total weights of body/lens from camera size.com, but realize this isn’t the same as actually having the camera gear in hand).

Has anyone else made a switch like this? (Cross-posted to the m4/3’s forum as well).

Thanks for any insights.
