I really don't expect the RF-S lens range (of specifically APS-C lenses) to be as extensive as EF-M, partly because Canon will treat them as a gateway to full-frame
That's the reason Canon doesn't make it,

and also the reason third party manufacturers won't be allowed to make it.

And as long as customers don't plan for glass first it will work in terms of profit for Canon.
I'm wondering if the R8 will follow the R7's intro to sell kit only (w 18-150) for months and months where many really didn't need another kit lens and continue to spill money to Canon's profit benefit
I'm also wondering if they'll finally lock out my odins, I'm hearing 3rd party flash issues with R6II
but mainly because the lenses which could have equal performance in all respects to full-frame will be too expensive.
I think the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 is pretty close to the RF 85mm f/2.0 IS stm. The RF lens has IS, 0.5 times magnification, and almost no distortion (which can even be a flaw for portraits btw) however, it's way bigger, more expensive, has mediocre AF and most importantly: the bokeh is less appealing.
small lens designs are possible like the siggy 56 f1.4 and siggy 18-50 f2.8 - but will we see this from Canon with their FF gateway objectives? - I doubt it, at least in short run and until pushed by competition
As long as Canon doesn't make the stuff and doesn't allow for the stuff to be made by others it's hard to prove your argument of "it would be to expensive" is true.
siggy is showing it is possible
also putting a FF sensor in a small APS-c body is possible as Sony A7c has shown - though I don't like their menu system - need more modern ergonomics
There are some indications though it might not be true, and the price of the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 (in whatever mount) is one of those signs. Canon not allowing third party manufacturers to make RF AF lenses is another indication.
imo the long run winner will be making things as small and powerful as possible, while making it have obvious utility over the iphone, and keeping the costs down so it is viewed as a value proposition.
for now, *for me*, I don't spill my money on repeat utility, and I doubt R8 will change that
