Aren't there three AF Limiter settings?
Yes, but only one can be customised, so only one can be used to fudge a fixed focus.
Why would you want focus-priority with a fixed focus distance; isn't the point of zone focusing not to require AF lock on a specific subject? Angle the camera down a bit and it's bound to acquire focus on the ground.
As above, the issue isn’t needing focus priority in fixed focus mode—as you say, that would be weird. It’s about having to change multiple settings in order to change focus mode.
Angling down might be a sort of workaround in some scenarios, but it obviously means you’re then composing with more ground than you’d like, and it’s not so useful when shooting from the hip. Plus, if your AF area is just the centre point and you need a wide area to pick up the ground, that’s then another setting to change anyway 🙂
Does it work with AF+MF? Might be a lot quicker to physically move the AF toggle instead of using an Fn button to switch between Focus and Release priority.
I did wonder whether some fudge with AF-C (which I don’t use) might work, as it allows a different shutter priority. I’ll give it a go.
(Edit: ok, gave it a go. It sort of works if you switch to AF-C, set to release priority, and also enable the limiter. But that’s still two separate controls even if the latter is assigned to a function button—and there are only four so something’s got to give. And you can still hear it driving the AF motor intermittently. I still don’t like the fudge enough to use it 😉)
I'm not disputing your experience, and ideally real snap focus would be best for zone focusing.
Yeah, it’s a real boon for street shooting. Ricoh have really nailed the feature, but a clicked lens ring just opens up more options with near-perfect usability. And it would mean the switch on the front left could go.
