You don’t. But you (or at least I) do want focus priority with AF, so if you want to switch between AF (with focus priority) and pseudo-fixed focus (which requires release priority) then you need to both (a) enable/disable the custom focus limiter and (b) switch between focus- and release-priority.

On a Ricoh it’s a single button press to toggle between AF and a proper fixed-focus mode. But since the X100 has a lens ring, that seems a more natural place to put it, especially as it can be combined with additional clicked settings (and even extended to add a “hard” focusing range, potentially with a tab, giving the best of all worlds).
