Fujifilm X-T5: Focus peaking highlight lingering during shutter half press

I’ve just upgraded to X-T5 from X-T4.

Whereas in the X-T4 the peaking highlights would disappear when the shutter button was half pressed, in the X-T5 the highlights linger. When there’s a lot of foliage this is a problem, because the highlights obscure the scene while shooting,

Is there a setting I have missed?

Do you use back button focus and have AF on the shutter button disabled? Not even sure if that’s a cause but it’s the first thing that came to mind.

Thanks for your post.

1. Yes, I’m using back button focus.
2. Shutter button AF is disabled.
Well I’ve just had the chance to check mine (hadn’t it to hand when I replied earlier) and I have the same as you. I’ve scanned through the various settings and I can’t see an obvious reason for it - so I’m guessing it’s either a “feature” or a bug, depending on which way you look at it.

DEFINITELY A BUG!

Focus peak highlights is my favourite way of focusing, but then half pressing to recompose gets severely messed up with the 'twitching highlights'.

XT2, XT3 and XT4 worked flawlessly, so something has been changed for the worse.

I hope they fix this bug (it's neither one thing nor the other!.. or make it selectable in the menu if they must).

Hi,
Here is the message I just sent to the client service. I believe that if enough people show dissatisfaction they might report it as a bug and update the firmware. You can copy/paste if you want!

Hello,
I'm contacting you regarding what seems to be a bug on the 5th generation camera.
On all previous generations, when using manual focus, all focus help (focus peaking or focus check for example) disappeared when the shutter release was pressed halfway.
This provided a natural view to recompose, if necessary, before taking the photo.

On the latest generation, the focus help remains activated even after the shutter has been pressed halfway. This makes the use of manual lenses much less practical. I personally have a Voigtlander 23mm 1.2, and its use was much more practical on my X-T4 and X-T30II. With this lens, focus check was activated automatically by touching the focus ring, and deactivated automatically by pressing halfway. Not any more. This makes it much less convenient to use.

Other people have complained about this behavior, for example:
- - https://www.fuji-x-forum.com/topic/35255-very-disappointed/
- https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4689635

The FujiRumors website even dedicated an entire article to it, where the vast majority of people said they preferred the old behavior. Many expressed their dissatisfaction in comments:
https://www.fujirumors.com/fujifilm-x-t5-the-issue-with-focus-peaking/

This video also shows the problem, where the videographer says he no longer uses manual lenses with his X-T5 because of this problem:

Could you please report this bug to make the use of manual lenses more pleasant?
Thank you very much.

A red herring you have. Focus peaking is only available on AF-M which obviously disables focusing from shutter release half-press.
