R5 / R6 improved tracking technique?
Having watched a bunch of YouTube vids on how to best set up buttons for tracking I have been using the AF-ON button for spot and the * button for eye tracking. This has been ok on the whole but sometimes annoying when it refuses to recognise the face I want to focus on. When I have to resort to spot it wont track so I have to move the spot around with my thumb on the rear screen or joystick.
New technique:
Set AF method to face + tracking on shutter release and use your thumb to touch the screen until the orange circle appears in EVF. Point the camera to place the orange circle over the subject you want to focus on then press the shutter release half way to engage tracking. Now recompose as required. Back button focus is not as usable with this as once the orange circle disappears the AF can choose something else it prefers.
Extra hint - you can use your nose against the screen to activate the orange circle. Interestingly, once the orange circle appears, using the * or AF-ON is less reliable than using the shutter release to begin tracking.
The YouTube home page is a good place to practice
Happy Christmas.
