Yes, the GP-E2 can collect a log in addition to providing real-time data to the camera it's mounted on. In that way you can provide immediate GPS data for the images taken with the camera it's sitting on, and in addition collect a log that can be applied to a second camera you use at the same time.
The compass works with the 1DX as well, just as it does if you attach the GP-E1 to the 1DX.
Cameras like the 1DX Mark II and R3, which both have built-in GPS, can also collect a GPS log simultaneously, a log which can be applied in post in the same way as the log from the GP-E2.
Somebody wrote above that the ability to connect the GP-E2 to the camera via a USB cable, which works with older DSLR models like my 7D, is omitted on R-series cameras. Where it works it's like having the GP-E2 in the hotshoe, except that the compass can't be trusted, since you can point the GP-E2 in any other direction than the camera is facing, if you want to.
When it is in log mode how many points will it remember. Does is rollover and start again replacing the oldest first when it get full?
It's logging GPS data, not so much points. It should hold a few days on this highest refresh setting. It will not roll over and you need the special Canon tool to delete existing logs. The whole process is very 1980s, don't expect any smarts or efforts to make it user friendly.
I looked with Windows and a usb cord but it records no data you see. So you must use the special software. Thanks for informing me that with the software it does not roll over. That is disappointing but I can live with it. I also a Magellan device which easier to use with the computer and it has huge storage of data points that rollover when filled.
It is a old design but it is rugged and my device works well when mounted on the hot shoe.
