Re: M6II: Tips to focus correctly
1
I have an R6II and here are my two cents. ML bodies are a big adjustment. Eye AF is wonderful but still in the infant stage IMO. In 10 years when we have buttonless cameras we won't be having these conversations. It is still just a computer with complex algorithms trying to figure out what you want and it does a very good job at it.
As for AF there is not much we can do. AF is contrast based and we have no control over fine tuning that. That leaves how you configure face and eye AF for how you shoot. Settings up the Case numbers and Switching Tracked Subjects and many here and on other threads have excellent suggestions.
To me the biggest thing is controlling your camera instead of it controlling you. If the system picks the wrong eye, loses an eye, etc I don't waste time worrying about why it did that. I just get it back on using the pre-focus technique created by users.
Here is a great example. See how he uses Expansion AF to control what he wants AF to focus on. Start at minute 18:17.

The Fro sure likes Expansion AF for pre-focus. I like to use Single point AF and others Spot AF. I also mapped a BBF to Zone AF for BIF. Spot which I seldom use which is for tight areas like small birds within a lot of leaves. I first came across this method when I watched this shoot Sony vs Canon shootout. Changed everything for me. Minutes 2:30 to 6:00.

Don't Look Up! The very fabric of captured light is noise.
