Another possibility you didn't mention is to buy a new or used EF 100-400 and an adapter. That gives you one stop faster capabilities than the RF 100-400, although it weighs a bit more, it's also relatively weather sealed and works great on R cameras.

I would not recommend getting an EF100-400 and adapting it to RF. If you have or can borrow one, by all means, try it. But don't buy one. I have an EF100-400ii, and also tested two other copies of that lens on my R5 and two other copies of the R5, and I was not happy with the DPAF accuracy with that EF lens adapted to RF (I have not tried it on my R7).

I strongly disagree. My EF 100-400ii is simply awesome on my R5.

My RF100-400 was sharper than my EF100-400ii on my R5 due to the misfocus error. Canon was eventually able to calibrate my EF lens to my R5 body, but it took 4 round trips to finally address the problem. They now charge for this calibration service.

In the process, Canon sent me two different R5 loaner bodies, and two different EF100-400ii loaner lenses, and they all had the exact same misfocus issue. It's subtle, but noticeable if you look. As I said, it's enough to turn a magnesium and flourite L-series pro lens into a plastic prosumer lens.
