Yes, the GP-E2 can collect a log in addition to providing real-time data to the camera it's mounted on. In that way you can provide immediate GPS data for the images taken with the camera it's sitting on, and in addition collect a log that can be applied to a second camera you use at the same time.

The compass works with the 1DX as well, just as it does if you attach the GP-E1 to the 1DX.

Cameras like the 1DX Mark II and R3, which both have built-in GPS, can also collect a GPS log simultaneously, a log which can be applied in post in the same way as the log from the GP-E2.

Somebody wrote above that the ability to connect the GP-E2 to the camera via a USB cable, which works with older DSLR models like my 7D, is omitted on R-series cameras. Where it works it's like having the GP-E2 in the hotshoe, except that the compass can't be trusted, since you can point the GP-E2 in any other direction than the camera is facing, if you want to.
