I bought some weeks ago the close-up Canon 500D 77mm lens-filter. C$100 seemed a very reasonable price, much less than the 100mm 2.8L IS macro, for sure.

Wanted to try it with the 70-200mm 2.8L IS II and 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS II lenses. The second one isn’t on the list of compatibility.

Any recommendations there?

The concept of a "compatibility" list for a close-up (CUL) lens baffles me.
So long as the diameter is sufficient, which is likely at 77mm, you can use it on anything.
You need an adapter ring for lenses smaller than 77mm.

The effect is more pronounced on longer focal  lengths.

The 500 indicated a 500mm focal length and the D that it's a duplex lens (that's good).
You did quite well on the price. I sometimes regret having sold mine.

A 500mm close up lens has a power of 1000mm / 500mm = 2D (diopters)

At infinity focus with the 500D attached your in focus object will be about 500mm (the CUL focal length) in front of the lens.

At infinity focus the magnification will be approximately focal length / 500mm.
So that's 200mm / 500mm = 0.4x and 400mm / 500mm = 0.8x for your two lenses respectfully.

Have fun !
