Maybe Sigma SHOULD put IBIS into their camera, or just lose those potential sales. I guess that's how they've been thinking over the years, adding more and more things to their cameras, like weather seals, interval timer shooting capability, video (in the DP Merrills), SFD mode, etc. Sigma definitely seeks to improve image quality for a reasonable price, as they should, or they will be relegated to be a third-rate company, and get beaten by the upcoming Chinese third-party lens makers, some of which will eventually become camera makers too. If you're going after image quality it makes sense to put IBIS into your cameras, in my opinion. Many people shoot handheld, and IBIS helps in such situations, especially when there is no OS in the lens, and none of Sigma's newest prime lenses have OS. Obviously Sigma sees a need for image stabilization in their cameras, or they would have never bothered to put digital stabilization into the fp.

I think it'd help a lot. It's not a deal breaker, but with the poor ISO performance of the Foveon sensor, it would go a long way toward making it enjoyable to use sans tripod.

My only negative thought on it is if the Foveon design would interfere with IBIS. Like maybe not enough read speed on the sensor to compare pixels and shift accordingly? But if they could do it...

As others stated, image quality is the most vital part, but I also see it as a given, so.

I don't think read speed is that slow, actually. I think Sigma could use just the data from the top layer of the sensor, like it's a monochrome sensor, specifically for the purpose of doing the IBIS calculations . . . if that's something that is required for IBIS to work. I always thought movement of the sensor in IBIS was based on information taken from an accelerometer, but maybe not. I don't know EVERYTHING.

That makes a lot of sense - you are likely correct and I just didn't know!

I doubt whether an IBIS device would survive Sigma's drop tests.
