Hi John.
Really helpful info.
Just a thought, do you think creating some batch files for members to semi automate the process would help them? For those that are not so PC savvy?
I don't know how to write a script, but I just wrote a step-by-step including a warning to rename the exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool.exe for using the, still somewhat primitive, Gui.
How to load and run ExifTool in bare-bones mode:

How to then load the GUI and find the shutter mode and then save it in the "Custom Tab" so you can find it next time:

I wrote it down because I tried and failed the last time I tried and figured others would have problems. The instructions are written by someone that writes code and does not care much about the user interface.
If you miss a step (like renaming the exiftool.exe file) and get an error, the advice (that I found on the website) is to re-read the instructions, which generally does not help people as they will keep making the same mistake).
I have lived my whole working life with people that are great at programming but sometimes lousy at human interfaces and instructions. "Hey the program works, it is their fault if they can't follow 10 pages of instructions and skip a step."
To be fair, it's really, really difficult to explain the blindingly obvious without treating the reader like a fool and, by the time you've spent hours or days or weeks creating something, almost everything in it looks blindingly obvious. Which just goes to show that the designer of something is the last person you should choose to write the manual, even though (s)he should be the first to check it.
