This may not be an option for everyone, but I tend to use Locus Map, which is an Android app to record my Track, which is used to geotag my photos. Its the only app that I've found that records compass directions as well as the GPS co-ordinates.
Once I have my Track as a GPX file, I then use ExifTool to geotag my photos.
I currently have Locus Map installed on a Hammerhead Karoo 2, which is attached to the Hotshoe of my RP. The Karoo 2 is the smallest Android device with a decent GPS chip - I did try a Unihertz Jelly 2, but the GPS performance was so poor it would rarely get a lock on a clear day in an open park.
GPS data is very important for me is some my work. I can that with GP-E2 by being careful to ensure GPS lock where I shoot. That device works well outside or near windows but not always so well indoors. I have logged GPS with a separate Magellan edge and then manually merged the position data (no compass). Your Hammerhead Karoo 2 is a much newer device and I assume the GPS is better and possibly uses multiple constellations for more robust operation. Wet trees were a problem sometimes blocking the Magellan. The GP-E2 is simple, nice and reliable to use with feeback from the camera LCD for proper operation. I trust it. The device also has a log mode with I assume will stored and give computer access to GPS tracks but I have never tried to use it that way which could be off the the camera. I have a EOS 5D mk IV which has built in GPS in the camera. It has compass data too. I think it is the only one that supports the compass data of the GP-E2 but it does require some manual calibration.
