The truth is we are spoiled in 2022 and many things have changed. The foveon made a big impact when the DPs came out, first APSC pocket camera ever. That alone was a huge marketing argument because in the 2010 ish photography frenzy ppl wanted to have a bigger sensor more than anything else, better IQ, better this and that ... and photography as a whole was En Vogue.

So, beside the factual limitations of this hardware, there were attention to the thing from the big dogs. The Time when Luminous Landscape was Luminous Landscape, when GetDPI was alive and of course the Dpreview Sigma community, some forums in France and many blogs including Japan (where we leached infos before the products were on the market). It was a great time and Sigma got lots and lots of attention. When the Merrills landed the first times were not good (the 6000 dollars SD1, the famous wooden German SD1 ...). It was the first very serious glitch in the marketing / production. The argument was the problems with the chips and they managed to fix it quick. We will never really know what happened here. It was the time of the transmission of the company to Mr Yamaki by his father.

From there everything plummeted in thin air and subsequently into bayer land. I was very emotionally angry when those events happened and it is understandable that some of you on this very forum are Salty as the dead sea. I for example went into sigma because of my extremely limited budget as a pro and the IQ. I bonded with the brand like my life depended of it to be fair.

The Dpreview Sigma subforum is one if not the only place on this planet where we keep this tech alive.

So for Sigma to really shine again with Foveon they will need to hit very hard but I can't put my finger on a particular feature who will set it appart beside the sensor itself... because we all know that if it is a 1.1.1 foveon there will be limitations somewhere.

This is why imagination and innovation is key and I do hope they will come up with something kinda unique, well priced.

But we should not forget the world we live in atm. War, semiconductors shortages ... this is absolutely not the best times to produce such revolution.

I see these cameras and sensors as a way to

1. Have something to measure and test their lenses

2. Have something interesting and fun for engineers to work on.

3. A source of pride having/doing something different.

4. Gaining working knowledge about 3 layer technologies to be applied in future products or designs. (Even failures and unpopular products count toward this).

5. Rewarding a loyal base of users.
