Can the GP-EP2 work off-camera if you use a hotshoe extender cable?

I do not know.   I do not have a hotshoe extender cable.   The GP-E2 comes with a USB cable to attach it to a computer and used with special logging software you can download from the Canon website.   This allows you to merge the GPS data with your photos in the computer.   I think some cameras allow GPS operation with the USB cable attached to the camera for certain models of Canon camera.   I have never done any of this usb cable stuff.

You can download the GP-EP2 manual from the Canon website for free and it describes every method of use it is capable of.   It not be surprising that you can find a way to not use the hot-shoe  that involved the USB cable.  I have not done anything but hotshot use.   It simple and reliable in my experience when put in the hot shoe.  The device does always work indoor but it works well by windows and outside.  It locks in a few seconds much of the time and a minute or two in other cases.   You can watch the read LCD Info screen and next to the bluetooth enable ICON on the info screen with the most stuff and the GPS icon will flash and the be solid when the GPS is locked.   It the GPS data is important you can verify everything is proper and GPS is locked prior to shooting by using this rear LCD info display.
