An interesting point as well is that I also have a Sony RX10 m4. I just weighed it and it is only 100g lighter than an R7 with the RF100-400 lens. So the R10 with the RF 100-400mm would certainly be lighter and about the same money. I know that wasn't the original question but somebody out there may be torn between the two for wildlife. Based on that and the abilities for birding of the Canon set up that would be my choice. But the Sony is a brilliant do everything quite well camera especially if for holiday use when you don't want more than one camera and lens.

The RX10M4 is definitely a strong contender in this space still. It has a faster e-shutter than the R10 (about twice as fast, actually), a very good lens that covers a ton of range, a competent EVF, plenty of controls, and weather sealing. It also packs a lot smaller with the lens retracted. On the other hand, the R10 has better DR at base ISO, better subject detection, the flexibility to use dozens of different lenses, a joystick, and is generally faster to operate. In video it’s kind of a tie; it depends on what you value more.

What’s really a tragedy is that it took 5 years for anyone to come up with a viable ILC alternative to the RX10M4, including Sony themselves. I’m glad that Canon finally did it.

Yes, I suppose it depends what your priorities are in the end. The noise levels are worse in the RX10 with cropping required for birding although the lens is 2-3 stops faster than an RF100-400mm to compensate the ISO.  The R10 bokeh nicer with that lens most of the time. Tracking probably better on the R10 but I have just drifted into birding aspects now Other types of photography are available
