Maybe you (all :D) have an "immensely" older version of this app
More seriously, I remember it used to work fine on my previous phone - and/or another version of Android. Though, even then, I found the operation to be quite cumbersome (not "immensely", but still :D) in comparison to a simple copy on a card.
However, many comments on PlayStore complain about the last version of the application being very unstable at this right time. The fact is "they" (like me, alone ) have to connect several time (BT, WIFI, both... whatsoever) and even when it sometimes comes to work, it can't connect to the internet or the app simply stops abruptly, and/or can't use/recognise BT device.
So, it seems it simply does not work well with the last version on many Android devices at this right time.
I'm glad that you (and/or some others) can make it work - and my advice is that you don't change anything, of course - but it does not help, and does not change anything for those for whom this app is unusable by now. Only Canon can do something about that.
Anyway, no worry for me : I find it easy enough with a direct copy to card.
BTW I can even do it with a smartphone with an usb-c card reader and no computer within reach, thanks to OTG. So I'm never left without a solution if I need to upgrade firmware (which is rarely vital to my own usage, especially in the field when I only have my smartphone available :D)
Haven't found any problems using the App with Android.
Simply connect, it detects an old version, then it downloads, sends over to the memory card in the camera and then update it.
