I had the same grief as you a while ago with my H1. I wrote to Fuji UK about it. I can't recall the details but their reply was something like it's only really there to give an idea of depth of field, not absolute distance. If only they told us that in the manual.

Turn it off. It only confuses the issue.

But that's not true. If the distance shown is really off (for example, it shows 3 meters when focusing on a distant object in the landscape), then it is really out of focus and the photo is soft. In short, it happens whenever the AF incorrectly focuses at a distance before the hyperfocal distance. If AF hits behind it, of course it's not that much/at all noticeable.
