Canon R6 MkII versus Rokinon RF 14mm 2.8 AF - ouch
3 months ago
I bought the subject named lens in June of 2021 and used it trouble free with my R6 for 18 months.
Brought home a new R6 MkII last night and oh boy that was scary...
Started off playing with a few Canon RF lenses, everything working great.
Installed the Rokinon lens and tried to turn on the camera. No display, no lights - just a "click". Tried a few times, thought the camera was just dead. Removed battery and reinstalled battery. Click. Nothing.
I removed the Rokinon lens and installed the Canon 24/105 F4L RF. Still didn't turn on. Click. I removed the battery and reinstalled it. The camera now turns on, but would take 5 seconds to fully power on. It did this repeatedly across numerous power cycles and battery removals. Literally a lagged 5 second power on sequence before the camera was ready to shoot.
Figured it was toast but couldn't understand how. As a last resort I went into the menus and hit "Reset Camera". It returned to normal operation. I had zero customizations - the camera was brand new. I went and installed all 7 of the Canon RF lenses I own and they all worked fine.
What in the heck? Incompatibility I can understand - but how crazy is it that power-on sequence was permanently screwed up until I "Reset Camera" just from installing a Rokinon lens?
I am sure Canon couldn't care less and won't do anything about it so now I have a 700$ paperweight and no astrophotography lens. Debating whether to just unload it now or cross my fingers and maybe it's "just" a bug in the R62? It shipped with firmware 1.0.0. I know several R5 firmware releases broke Rokinon lenses but later revisions "fixed" them.
Ugh.
