If the camera isn't on a tripod, that could easily be your issue. More resolution means less camera shake allowed for a sharp image.

Totally agree and this was a common topic years ago when we had hikes in MP in DSLRs.

I’d tested on tripod and the same results. Having said that 1/500 with Ibis I would have thought this would be sufficient. The result vary from wrong focus point to totally softish images.

Well, let’s see one - along with a description of exactly how you went about focusing (or not, as the case may be). I never miss with my aging X-T2 or newer X100V and I can’t imagine the X-T5 being any different.

I've never had this issue and I started with the trusted XE1, XT1,XT3

You seem to be be convinced that it's user error from your remark. Will dig out something to post

User error in the sense of stopping down to f/8 on an APS-C camera with 40 MP, yes, that is what I think at least being part of the reason for lack of detail / sharpness.

Dan

The 40MP sensor won’t suffer any lack of detail/sharpness due to diffraction at f/8 relative to the old sensor. You may be able to achieve greater resolution at wider apertures with the new sensor, but you aren’t going to be any worse off than before at f/8. With the possible exception of noise, you should always get better image quality with a higher resolution sensor than a lower resolution one regardless of the lens/aperture.
