Evening all,
I am trying to experiment with 2nd curtain flash, however when I have it set on the camera, the flash fires both at the start of the exposure and at the end.
Any reason why this could be ?

Try turning off red eye reduction in the flash menu.

Red eye reduction does a brief flash at the beginning of the exposure to get your subject's pupils to close down which will reduce the chance of red eye occurring.

I believe the pre-flash in second curtain flash when using E-TTL (exposure through the lens) is for the meter to obtain proper flash exposure when calculating flash power. Since second curtain flashes at the end of the exposure, the gap is noticed, especially with long exposure. The pre-flash doesn’t get noticed with first curtain because it’s so quick and the actual flash fires right away at the beginning exposure.

It’s actually quite handy when my kids do light drawing with sparklers because they know when to start making their designs.
