Nikon Lens Compatibility (D3000 to D500?)

Hey all, I've been into photography for about a few years but I admit I am completely oblivious and unfamiliar to much of the terminology.

I've been shooting with a Nikon D3000 camera, and it has a AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm lens. I would like to upgrade to something like a D500 as I have heard that it is a good camera when it comes to low light and/or action/sports shots (feel free to let me know if I have been misinformed). I am, however, a broke college student and would really appreciate it if I didn't have to shell out a couple hundred in addition to the cost of a D500.

Would my AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm lens be compatible with a Nikon D500? If not, are there any other cost-effective lenses that would work with a D500?

Thanks in advance!!
