Today I got the chance to try the EF35 f2 lens hood on the RF 24-105 f4-f7.1.
It did not work. Although bayonet thread has the same pattern but the 35mm hood is about a hair larger by 1 or 2mm.
So it looks like I’d have to settle with the shallower official hood made for FF.
It’s amazing how they do that. The RF 85 f/2 has the same diameter barrel as the RF 100-400 f/5.6-8. But the 85 hood is just a mm off as well. Just to sell another piece of plastic.
There's nothing to stop you wrapping the original full-frame hood for the lens with tape to reduce the shading of the corners. My 12-24mm has a built it petal hood for full-frame use, with a lens cap that doubles as a tubular APS-C lens hood that has an 82mm filter thread at its outer end. The lens looks comical on an EOS M but would give me the chance of using front mounted filters on it with the lens hood appropriately sized for APS-C. My EOS R gives me the chance to use rear mounted filters with that lens.
You may be worrying unnecessarily - in an adjacent thread somebody is seriously suggesting using a hood for a 50mm lens on the smaller RF 70-200mm lens. And I think the mismatched bayonets are probably more about stopping people using telephoto lens hoods on wide angle lenses. Which is a pity as long ago I carved myself a petal lens hood for my FD 28mm out of a tubular hood for an FD 50mm lens.
