I hate my TV to corp away the head or foot of my photos on free hand.

As I shall compile my photos into video for easy playback (large quantity), to suit for majority of TV I convert my 4:3 photos to 16:9 format in advance.

I shall either:

  • Crop the 4:3 photos into 16:9, so the edges of the original photo would be lost; or
  • Add broder to the 4 sides, black color could be the best to convert the 4:3 format into 16:9.

If you don't want to distort or crop an image, you only need to add a border to two sides (either the left & right, or the top & bottom).  That can give you the largest undistorted version that fits on your TV screen.
