I know you said you want a "top of the line" lens. But I believe you are looking for expensive lens credibility over image quality. I owned the 50-230 and the 55-200 at the same time and I ended up traveling more with the 50-230 because the image quality was pretty much the same and the weight was so much lighter. As for image quality, the 50mm 2.0 is at least as good as the 56 1.2 (possibly better). It also focuses much more quickly and quietly and is a fraction of the weight of the 56mm. Unless you "Need" to shoot at 1.2 or 1.4 (which most people don't and shouldn't) the 50mm 2.0 is a better all-around lens.
