What is going on here?

I would appreciate an explanation of what's taking place here. The feeder is in our backyard, mature oak tree environment in Santa Cruz, Ca.. Normally the feeder is visited by chickadees, warblers, stellar jays, acorn woodpeckers, and downy woodpeckers. Visitors come alone, as a pair, and infrequently 3 at a time.

About 3 weeks ago we saw for the first time the phenomenon shown in the photo below, where a flock of 20 -30 of these small birds descend onto the feeder for 1 or 2 minutes, and then vanish, likely to return 2 - 4 days later for another 1 - 2 minute visit.

If anyone knows what is taking place, I would be interested in learning.

W have lived in this new house for 2 years and have not seen this occur before 3 weeks ago.

Best,

TFP
