This would be hugely disappointing if turns out to be true.
Is the R10 incapable of producing real, unprocessed Raw files ?
No review mentioned this issue, so what is going on ?

I've been doing some testing with my new R10 and the 18-150 kit lens.
First thing I wanted to try was disabling any lens correction from the Raw files to find the real performance on this lens.
Surprisingly, the JPEGs produced by the camera are identical to the raw files with lens correction disabled.
Which might be a sign that the R10 produces precooked (demosaiced and lens corrected) CR3 files.

I used 4 different Raw software with CRaw or Raw files disabling the lens corrections but found the same thing.
Am I overlooking something or is this the case for the R10 and possibly R7 ?

Hi Photato,

You can freely disable all sorts of correction options in the camera, but this will only effect the Jpgs, the raw files will always have all the data (including lens corrections) embedded.

Raw files are data which needs to be processed. Some raw processing software will use the embedded lens data to apply lens corrections when they produce an image from the raw file, while others - like DxO PhotoLab - apply their own custom lens correction algorithms. This is why an image produced by DxO may be different from one produced by Lightroom in terms of visible area (there will be other differences).

If you disable ‘all correction options’ in camera, the jpg engine will not apply these when it processes the raw data in camera to produce jpgs. Some corrections will still be applied to the jpgs as these are not user defined options.

All manufacturers put their own slant on the raw data produced by their cameras, which is one reason why, for example, a Sony ‘raw’ will be subtly different to a Canon ‘raw’.

We have an R7 and produce beautiful images from its raw files. Stop worrying…

Yes, thanks for the explanation. I already knew this.
It was a mistake I made when taking the shots, so I arrived at the wrong conclusions.
However, raw files purity can't be always taken for granted, it would depend on manufacturer and or camera model.

Hi

Hi Photato,

Please understand in posting a (brief) explanation, there was no intention to patronise and I'm pleased you've now been able to reassure yourself the R10 doesn't produce 'fake raws'.

As I alluded to my previous answer, there are many different types of raw files (one of the reasons Adobe originally introduced the DNG file format was to provide file compatibility).
