Electronics shelf life

Old cameras were mostly big chunks of metal, new cameras have nano-meter scale components (gates in image processor) so i got wondering: what is a shelf life of DSLRs?

I realize that 20 year old DSLR is easily outmatched by newer models, but do D1 cameras still work? How about even older models? We may be coming up on to the time when really old digital cameras will simply stop working due to electrics deteriorating, but naturally that time span depends on specific manufacturing processes used to build specific set of electronics (even silly variables like the type of flux used when wave soldering the motherboard can cause a difference in lifespan).

So, does anyone still have functioning nikon D1? Any predictions how long electronics will last? There are still electronics built in 1970 that still function, but back then components were larger as well, so more material needed to deteriorate to cause a problem.
