Has anyone removed the antialiasing filter from a D800?

I was thinking of having the antialiasing filter on my mint D800 removed (basically making a a D800E).  Comparing my images with my Fuji XPro2 and Sigma SD1 to the D800 images, the filter does appear to me to put a veil over the image, lowering contrast and detail.  Comparing the test images on here confirms this.

Has anyone had this done?  Were you happy with the results?  Am I wasting my time and money obsessing over this?

The used value of it is about 600-700, it would cost me 300+ to have the work done by Lifepixel.  I could probably sell my D800 and get a D800E or even a D810, but my camera is in very nice shape and IDK if I would find one as nice.

Thanks for you time and attention.
