K-3iii and change of default travel bag

For several years, what I always carried was

  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art (coat-pocket carry for very low light sites)
  • Pentax 18-135mm or 16-85mm (daytime walkabout)
  • Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 (evening walkabout)

Packing now for another trip, I'm taking

  • Pentax 35mm f/2.4 as my coat-pocket fast lens
  • Pentax 16-85mm (daytime walkabout)
  • Pentax 20-40mm Ltd (evening walkabout)

The Sigma 30mm loses out to the plastic fantastic simply based on size--it was never really a comfortable coat-pocket lens. But the high ISO performance of the K-3iii makes the move to f2.4 supportable. I'm sure I'm going to miss the 30mm fl though ...

The 20-40mm replaces the Sigma 17-50mm for similar reasons: lens size and the low-light performance of the body. Plus the 20-40mm is WR.

Probably the most noteworthy here is the re-adoption of the cheap Pentax 35mm. I basically ignored this lens for 5 years because it simply wouldn't lock focus in low light with the K-3 (and barely with the K-30). Despite the f/2.4, it was intolerable in the dark. It's pretty hard to confuse now.
