The mighty GH5M2 and reflection on Sony A1 upgrade
3 months ago
I have now done a small outing with the A1 using the same set up I have for the GH5M2 for video
The weight is 0.4 kg more so nothing major

What I gained shooting in 4K
1. Two stop ISO from 3200 to 12800 for useable footage although with the GH6 I can do 6400
2. Autofocus is even too keen I needed to slow it down and disable it at times
3. Dynamic range the camera simply does not clip
4. More accurate colors in slog3 .> surprising
What I did not gain
1. The 4K footage does not look more sharp or richers it looks very much the same
2. The A1 needs the touch screen to track subjects and the LCD does not fold which is not great and the touch screen does not work with my etip gloves all the time
3. IBIS is very poor seems to have gone back to a compact camera even with a monopod is really shaky
Looking at photos instead the camera performance is stellar and the images just look superb. However Sony out of camera colors and jpeg are extremely crass for my liking oversaturated oversharpened and frankly poor. The eye autofocus works with cats, dogs people birds the lot
This is my second attempt at full frame after the S5 (I got rid of it in 2 months) I do believe this time I will keep the camera but there are some use cases (wildlife video) where the GH5M2 or GH6 with PL 50-200 is just unbeatable in terms of ergonomics IBIS and IQ and yes you cannot shoot in the dark
