I wonder if you might consider how the comparison looks when you add the 1.4x to the R7 as well. That is the apples to apples comparison as far as I'm concerned.

Then add the 2x TC to the R5 and compare it with the R7 with 1.4x. Either way, each pixel samples the same subject area. If you keep adding teleconverters, sooner or later you will have magnified the image so much that you find it unacceptable. And here's the crucial point: If you compare the same TC on each body, you will reach that point faster on the R7.

Yes, this is a really important point. I agree. If the image looks the same on the R7 with the 1.4x as the R5 with the 2x then there really is no point in bothering with the R7 at all.

Your comparison should be this: use 1 step greater teleconverter on the R5 then on the R7. Which one gives the better image? I don't know.

Yea, exactly. I agree. Need to test this.

If you're determined to throw money at this, then by all means go ahead. I can tell you that some people who have used both cameras for birds prefer the R5.

I'm not planning on keeping all this gear. My goal is to optimize for my needs and then sell what I don't use. It is about keeping my current outlay constant and moving things around to calibrate to maximize reach, bokeh, etc that we've already discussed. Fortunately, generous return policies during the holidays mean you can try equipment out and then return accordingly (as long as you don't damage it!)

I do think it's possible that the ef 300 f/2.8 with 1.4 and 2x on the R5 is the best that one can get in this price range. If that's true, then that's true!

So now you pay your money and you make your choice. The owl carving is a famous, fairly useless example that has no feather detail.

Yeah, agree again. it would be nice to have another example but instead need to explore myself.

EDIT: This post sounds annoyed, but it really isn't. I envy you your choices.

I am grateful to have the means to do photography at all, let alone be able to explore different choices like this. Not lost on me! But also feel a need to clarify that its either/or to me and not all when it comes to gear.

Thanks!
