Indeed - so why would you want to prevent them having the choice to make up their own mind about what is best for them?

I think it is more likely that Canon doesn't want the competition from say Sigma Art lenses than concern about being tarnished by inferior quality. They didn't seem to worry when 3rd party lenses weren't the higher quality they are now!

Yes. Canon really doesn't want something like the Samyang 85mm f/1.4, which weighs almost as much as the RF 85mm f/2, delivers stunning image quality and costs the same as the slower RF lens. They would rather lock you in and force you into the 85 f/1.2 L.

The IS and much much closer focusing of the RF 85 F2 make it a much better value, to me, than the Samyang. I have also found the IQ of the RF to be stunning. Others may have different preferences, of course.
